Why Your Makeup Never Looks Like the TikTok Tutorial (And How to Fix It)

From cakey foundation to mismatched shades — here’s why your makeup might not be giving what you hoped (and what to do instead).

If you’ve ever sat down to do your makeup, followed the exact TikTok tutorial step-by-step, and still somehow ended up looking… nothing like the video — trust me, you’re not alone.

Maybe the foundation looked too orange. The concealer felt cakey. Your makeup separated halfway through the day. Or somehow the look just didn’t feel like you.

As a makeup artist, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is this:

Beautiful makeup is never one-size-fits-all.

What works for your favourite influencer might not work for your skin type, undertone, features, or makeup goals — and that’s completely okay.

Let’s talk about why your makeup may not be working the way you want it to… and how to fix it.

1. You’re Skipping Skin Prep

Flawless makeup starts before foundation ever touches your face.

Your makeup will only sit as beautifully as the skin underneath it.

If your skin is dry, foundation can cling to texture and patches. If your skin is oily and unprepped, makeup may separate or shift throughout the day. If your skin is dehydrated, even luxury products can begin to look heavy or cakey.

Before makeup, focus on creating a healthy base:

  • Hydrated skin

  • A moisturizer suited to your skin type

  • Skin prep that addresses your concerns

  • A primer that complements your makeup goals

For dry skin, hydration-focused prep is essential.

For oily skin, lightweight moisturizers and balancing products typically perform best.

For combination skin, strategic layering can make all the difference.

Mudiwa’s Tip:
Your makeup will never sit properly if your skin underneath is not prepared first.

2. Your Foundation Shade Might Be Wrong

This is one of the most common struggles I see — especially for women with deeper skin tones.

Sometimes the issue is not the foundation itself.

It is the undertone.

You can technically have the correct depth of foundation while still having the wrong undertone, which is why makeup sometimes appears:

  • Too orange

  • Too grey or ashy

  • Too red

  • Too yellow

  • Different from your neck and chest

A quick guide:

Warm undertones tend to have golden or yellow hues.
Cool undertones lean pink or red.
Neutral undertones sit somewhere in between.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is matching foundation to their hand instead of their face, neck, and chest.

Foundation should blend seamlessly into the skin — not sit on top of it.

This is one of the reasons I created The Signature Makeup Bag Curation— to help women stop wasting money on products that do not actually suit them.

3. You’re Using Too Much Product

Social media has made many people believe that more makeup equals better makeup.

In reality, some of the most beautiful glam looks come from using less.

Too much concealer, excessive powder, heavy contouring, or over-layering products can make makeup feel thick instead of polished.

Soft glam is all about balance.

You do not need heavy foundation everywhere.

You do not need oversized concealer placement.

You do not need multiple layers of powder.

Instead, focus on:

  • Strategic product placement

  • Thin, buildable layers

  • Proper blending

  • Gradually increasing coverage where needed

The goal should always be makeup that enhances — not overwhelms.

4. TikTok Makeup Isn’t Always Made for Your Face

This may be the most important truth in this article:

Not every makeup trend is designed for you.

And that is okay.

A technique that works beautifully on someone with almond-shaped eyes may not work the same on hooded eyes.

Contour placement varies depending on face shape.

Even makeup finishes change based on skin type and undertones.

What works best often depends on:

  • Face shape

  • Eye shape

  • Skin tone

  • Undertone

  • Skin type

  • Desired finish

At MudsBeauty, one of my biggest beauty philosophies is simple:

Makeup should enhance — never hide.

Your makeup should still feel like you, simply elevated.

5. Your Products May Not Work Well Together

Sometimes the issue is not the products themselves.

The products simply are not compatible.

For example, oil-heavy skincare paired with certain water-based foundations can cause separation.

Some primers work beautifully with one foundation but poorly with another.

Too many heavy layers can also cause makeup to pill, shift, or lose longevity.

This is why makeup is not just about buying expensive products.

It is about understanding what products actually work together.

When the right products are paired properly, makeup becomes effortless.

6. The Truth: You Need Makeup Tailored to You

Here is what I wish more women knew:

Beautiful makeup is not about owning the most expensive products.

It is about understanding what works for your skin, your features, your goals, and your lifestyle.

What works beautifully for someone else may not work for you — and that does not mean you are bad at makeup.

It simply means you need techniques and products designed around you.

That is exactly why I created:

The Signature Makeup Bag Curation
The Makeup Bag Audit
1-on-1 Beauty Coaching

Because beauty should feel personal — not overwhelming.

Final Thoughts

If makeup has ever felt frustrating, inconsistent, or discouraging, I want you to know this:

It is not because you are bad at makeup.

You likely just have not found the right techniques, products, or routine for you yet.

When your makeup is tailored to your skin, undertone, facial features, and goals — everything changes.

Your makeup becomes easier. More flattering. More effortless.

And most importantly, it begins to feel like you.
